Rocky V

Rocky V starts off right where Rocky IV left us.  Tony is celebrating Rocky's win over Drago, when he hears Rocky call for Adrian from the shower.  Adrian finds Rocky sitting on a bench curled up.  Rocky senses something is wrong because he cannot stop his hands from shaking.  Adrian wants Rocky to see a doctor, but Rocky insists not to, and just wants to go home.  Rocky's son Robert is waiting at the airport as the group arrives home.  There is a converence in the airport hanger which all attend.  As Rocky talks about Russia, a boxing promoter (George Washington Duke) interupts the converence and challenges Rocky to a match against up and coming boxer Union Caine.  Adrian insists that Rocky is retired and has "nothing else to prove".  The challenge is turned down and the Balboa's return home.  Robert senses something different about his dad, but Paulie assures him that he just took a few nasty hits.  But the family was about to find out different.
Adrian:
"It's gone.  The money.  Everything's gone!"
Rocky looses all of his money from a mistake Paulie made.  An accountant took all of their money, so Rocky wants to box to get it back.  Adrian insists that Rocky see a doctor, and when he does, he discovers that he has irreversible brain damage.  Rocky is crushed inside, and the family is forced to move back into the old neighborhood.  The only thing that Rocky still owns is Mighty Mickey's gym.  Rocky remembers that Mickey gave him a cuff link for good luck back before he fought Apollo for the first time.  The cuff link was like an "angel on your sholder" and was to let Rocky know that if he felt that he was "going down", that he should get back up.  Rocky decides to open up the gym again, and soon boxers are working out there.  As this goes on, Duke is still taunting Rocky into fighting again.  Adrian keeps stepping in, knowing Rocky's passion for the sport.  Both Rocky and Adrian feel that they are going back to where they started, until a young boxer entered their lives.

Rocky:
"It's all heart and fire, heart and fire!!"

As Rocky is saddened more and more, a young boxer named Tommy Gunn approaches the former champion.  Rocky sees potential in him because he sees the hunger in Tommy's eyes.  Tommy also was a street fighter, just like Balboa.  Rocky begins training Tommy, and soon he starts rising in the ranks.  During this time, Rocky inadvertantly puts Tommy ahead of his family.  His son Robert is going through a tough time at school, but Rocky is too busy with Tommy.  Duke also sees that Rocky is spending a lot of time with Tommy.  He starts to promise Tommy many many things, such as a shot at the newly titled Union Caine.  Tommy is also starting to get frustrated with the media calling him "Rocky's puppet".  Before long, Tommy turns on Rocky, and goes to sign a contract with Duke.  Robert has also given up on his father.  Rocky starts to be destroyed inside, angry that after all of his accomplishments, he has ended up right back at the beginning.  Adrian intercedes, saying that he was still the same man, but that he was losing his family.  Rocky finally understands that he can't change Tommy, so he makes amends with his son, and accepts his new life.
Rocky:
"Now you knocked him down, why don't you try knocking me down now."
Duke:
"In the ring, in the ring.  Tommy Gunn only fights in the ring!"
Rocky:
"My ring's outside."
Tommy Gunn:
Yeah?  Lets do it!"
Rocky, Paulie, Adrian and Robert all watch the title bout against Tommy and Caine on tv.  As Tommy boxes, Rocky feels Tommy remembers what he taught him.  Rocky hits a punching bag as Tommy wins the title from Union Caine.  After the fight, Tommy thanks Duke for all that he has done, never once mentioning Rocky.  In a post interview, the media bashes Tommy, saying he beat a second rate fighter, and that his title was manufactured.  Duke tricks Tommy into believing the only way he can step out of Rocky's shadow is to challenge him to a fight.  Tommy does just that, tracking Rocky and Paulie to a bar near Mickey's gym.  He challenges Rocky, but Rocky declines.  Paulie starts to yell at Tommy, and gets hit in the face for his efforts.  Rocky is furious, and tells Tommy to meet him outside.  The street fight begins, with Rocky's skill winning over Tommy at first.  With a cheap shot, Tommy gets the best of Rocky, and Balboa goes down.  The effects of the brain damage start to set in.  Knowing that Mickey would never want him to give up, Rocky fights on.  In a grueling street fight, the two go at it.  In the end, Rocky is the victor.

Rocky:
"Thank you for being born."

After things have calmed down, Robert takes Rocky to the museum.  The museum steps are where Rocky has been running up all of the past years, and he never knew about the muesum behind them.  Rocky decides to give Mickey's cuff link to Robert.  Robert is grateful to have the cuff link, and is happy to have his dad back too.  The two head into the museum, as the Rocky statue ,which was put on the steps as a gift to Rocky, looks onto the Earth.  And so the Rocky saga concludes...or does it?

Rocky V was one of the most emotional films in the series.  Bill Conti's music returns and it is great.  There is much character development and the director is the same man that directed the 1st film.  Tommy Gunn was a neat character.  He came from the same streets as Rocky, but never had the same heart, which led him to a power/money hungry existence.  We see a lot of Robert in the film.  He feels neglected by his father after Tommy comes in the picture.  The father-son subplot was a new addition to the saga.  Paulie reverts back to the old character, loosing his comic relief, but gaining back his complexity.  Adrian tries desperatly to protect Rocky from getting hurt, and eventually helps him get his priorities straight.  Rocky had much growth in this film.  Do to the brain damage and loss of money, he is forced to go back to where he came from.  Rocky is angry and saddened at the same time, and his only hope is in Tommy, who then turns on him.  After everything is done, Rocky gains back what is important to him.  He never lets Duke get him into the ring.  I feel this movie is a great ending to a great saga.  But we may get more Rocky in the near future.  Who's complaining?  Not me!!!
