Rocky III

Rocky III begins 3 years after the end of Rocky II.  Rocky has defended his title 10 times in the last 3 years.  He has learned to read, and has become more like the Apollo Creed from the first film.  Rocky does commercials, and even appears on tv shows (the muppet show).  He is raking in the cash, and enjoying his "celebrity" life.  Paulie has grown to dispise the life that Rocky and Adrian have achieved.  In a drunken state, he smashes a pinball machine modeled after Rocky, and is taken to jail.  Rocky bails him out, and the two start an arguement in the parking lot.  Paulie says everyone owes him and Rocky says that friends "do because they want to do".  They start to fight, but Paulie gets winded.  The scene ends with Paulie asking for a job, and Rocky giving him one.  Rocky and Paulie, even though they quaral, are still good friends.  But the peace in Rocky's life is about to change.
Clubber Lang:
"You tell Balboa that!  I'm coming after him!  You tell him!!"
As Rocky's popularity began to soar, another boxer from the mean streets of Chicago was training hard.  Clubber Lang was a lot like Rocky back before Balboa fought Apollo.  Clubber was a brawler, and he trained alone.  He trained just as hard as Rocky used to, and he was hungry.  Clubber took an opportunity to confront Balboa by interrupting a statue dedication to the Itallion Stallion.  Just as Rocky was considering retirement, Clubber appeared from out of the crowd and challenged Rocky.  Clubber claimed that Rocky had been "ducking him" and that he was afraid to fight him.  Rocky, not wanting to back away from a challenge, wants to accept a title match.  But Mickey wants nothing to do with it.  Later on, Rocky finds out that his previous 10 title defenses were fought against hand picked opponents.  Rocky, feeling that he never fought anyone in their "prime", convinces Mickey to train him one last time.  Mickey agrees, but the decision would be his last.

Mickey:
"We did everything right."
Rocky:
"We got more to do."

Rocky trains for the fight, but not the way he used to train.  The media surrounds him during his training, and he takes the fight very lightly.  Before the match begins, Rocky and Clubber confront each other in the hall way.  There is a dispute, and Mickey is injured in the scuffle.  He had been having trouble lately with his heart (as seen earlier, when Rocky had a charity match with the wrestling heavy weight champion Thunderlips, played by Hulk Hogan).  Rocky wants to postpon the match, but Mickey tells him to go out and fight without him.  Rocky does just that, but the thought of Mickey's injuries and the light training for the matchup cause problems for him.  In the second round, Clubber Lang K.O's Rocky and becomes the new heavy weight champion.  Battered and bruised, Rocky returns to the locker room to find Mickey dying.  Mickey dies thinking that Rocky won the match, and the Itallion Stallion is devastated.  He had lost his trainer and his friend.
Apollo:
"Now when we fought, you had the eye of the tiger man, the edge!"
Rocky had given up, and felt that there was no chance to redeem himself.  That's when a familiar face showed up.  Apollo Creed finds Rocky and convinces him that he can get back the title.  Creed takes Rocky, Adrian, and Paulie to California, where Apollo started his boxing career.  He proceeds to try and mold Rocky into a technical fighter.  He tries at first with hope, but Apollo starts to loose patients with Rocky, who eventually admits that he is afraid of the fight with Clubber.  With some comvincing from Adrian, Rocky realizes that Mickey was trying to keep him safe all of those years, and that everyone believes that he can get back what he has lost.  Rcoky finally starts to believe in himself again, and begins to train as hard as he used to.  Apollo and Tony (Creed's trainer) mold Rocky into a technical machine, but still feel that by the 3rd round of the match, Rocky may be out of steam.

Clubber Lang:
"I'm gonna bust you up."
Rocky:
"Go for it!"

Led by Apollo and Paulie, Rocky confronts Clubber in the ring.  Adrian sits in the crowd cheering on her husband.  As the first round begins, Rocky goes out swinging.  He beats the hell out of Clubber, getting in dozens of blows to the head and body.  Clubber only gets in a few shots and is furious!  Apollo tells Rocky that he is doing great, but warns him not to get cocky.  The second round goes to Clubber.  Lang gets inside and pummels the Itallion Stallion.  Rocky gets knocked down repeatedly as Apollo tells Rocky not to stand toe-to-toe with the brawler from Chicago.  Before the 3rd round begins, Rocky tells Apollo he is wearing down his opponent and that he has a strategy.  Rocky has a very hard head, and takes punishment just so he can get inside and then unleash a fury of punches.  He does just that, and before the end of the 3rd round, he K.O's Clubber and wins the belt back.  Later on, Apollo and Rocky have a friendly match against each other with no media or any other attention.  We may never know who won that battle, but I would say that they both won a strong friendship.

Rocky III was a great sequel, with much character development.  First, we see the new villian, who is anything but pleasant.  He talks trash, and is a little stronger than Rocky.  Mr. T played the character very well, not giving him any kind of sympathy.  It is interesting to note also, that this is the only movie in the series that does not go a full 15 rounds.  We get to see Adrians more persuasive side, and how she has grown  more out of her shyness.  There is great chemistry between Apollo and Paulie, who add some comic relief to the fill.  Apollo becomes a friend instead of an enemy, and Paulie becomes much more likeable.  We get to see a new Rocky at the beginning of the film, and then one of his most emotional states, as he tries to cope with the lose of Mickey, played beautifully once again by Burgess Meredith.  This was a great film, and it actually was the first Rocky movie I ever saw.  The end of the film started the beginning of probably the most popular sequel of them all.
